Today, Jeremy Corbyn refused to rule out ditching Trident as part of a review of our vital defence capabilities. The thousands of Plymouth staff working for Babcock at Devonport Dockyard, rely on government contracts for the maintenance and refitting of the Vanguard-class nuclear submarines. Today’s interview on BBC1 with Andrew Marr highlights how Corbyn cannot be trusted on defence.
A Corbyn-led government not only risks thousands of jobs at Devonport Dockyard, but also downgrading the UK's defence capability.
As the Conservative candidate, I am committed to increasing spending on our Armed forces and defence capabilities. If you elect me as your MP on 12th December, I will work with Boris and his government to ensure the future of Trident and the Armed Services based in Plymouth, protecting jobs in our city and the defence of our nation now and into the future.
Try as he will, I find it hard to see how Corbyn’s Labour candidate in Plymouth, Luke Pollard, can offer any sort of similar guarantee to the people of Plymouth. Whatever commitments Labour have made, today's interview speaks for itself.
