The Prime Minister has expanded the Future High Streets Fund, confirming that another 50 towns in England will be given a share of £1 billion to reenergise their high streets.
In Plymouth, the Prime Minister and the Communities Secretary have invited Plymouth City Council to develop a plan for how it will spend its share of £1 billion.
This additional funding is part of the Prime Minister’s £3.6 billion Towns Fund announced last month which will ensure that towns are getting the improved transport and the improved broadband connectivity that they need to boost local growth and create more jobs.
Commenting, Plymouth Sutton and Devonport Parliamentary Candidate, Rebecca Smith said:
“I am delighted that Plymouth City Centre will receive a share in the £1 billion, and that Plymouth City Council can develop proposals that will genuinely keep our city centre at the beating heart of the community in Plymouth.”
“With our towns, cities and high streets facing challenges, we will reenergise these communities, empowering local leaders to help transform their high streets and town centres.”
“Meeting with the Chief Executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, Steve Hughes recently it was great to be able to share ideas about how we could see the city centre and West End transformed and redeveloped in a sustainable way."
The Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:
“Our high streets are right at the heart of our communities, and I will do everything I can to make sure they remain vibrant places where people want to go, meet and spend their money.
“But with our town centres facing challenges, we’re today expanding the High Streets Fund to support over 100 high streets to regenerate – backed by £1 billion of vital investment.
“This scheme is going to reenergise and transform even more of our high streets – helping them to attract new businesses, boost local growth, and create new infrastructure and jobs.”
