Plymouth's dental care has been in a fix; demand is through the roof while Plymouth-trained dentists have left for sunnier climes.
University of Plymouth's Peninsula Dental School has been front and centre of the fight to crack down on Plymouth's 20,000 waiting list. In May 2024, under the last Conservative Government, initial plans were announced for a new dental clinic. Last week a site was announced - the former First Stop Shop on New George Street.
This £5m city-centre dental clinic is a huge step forward for dental care in Plymouth and the surrounding area. The clinic will allow up to 16 final-year students to work alongside specialists to provide urgent care to patients without an NHS dentist. All thanks must go to the Peninsula team for making this happen.
I am hopeful that people in South West Devon will directly benefit from this groundbreaking project. I sit on Plymouth's cross-party dental taskforce which includes Peninsula and will follow progress closely.
