Last Monday I joined the Coalition for Global Prosperity's panel, Food for Empowerment: How Can Food Security Unlock the Futures of Women and Girls, at Conservative Party Conference to discuss how food security can unlock women's potential. I have championed women's rights locally as the Chair of the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Commission. As a rural MP, it was intriguing to learn about the link between food security and women's rights.
In many nations, gender inequalities restrict women's access to resources and services - such as land, knowledge, and food - ultimately resulting in food insecurity and malnutrition. Achieving gender equality requires support locally, nationally and internationally. I share the CGP's belief that Britain's leadership on the international stage matters and that it can be a force for good in the world.
