Today I was able to add my comments to the issue of the possibility of a 'No-Deal' Brexit.
ITV News West Country did a piece this evening on the possible impact of more continental ferries coming in and out of Plymouth, Poole and Portsmouth and therefore on the volume of freight and passengers coming on and off ferries into Plymouth.
Whether we leave the EU on 29th March with or without a deal, it's right and responsible for the Government to be planning for both scenarios. This includes working with Brittany Ferries, the Border Agency and HM Customs and Excise to ensure Plymouth is prepared.
I fully understand the need for certainty as soon as possible, but in the meantime, I am pleased the Government is preparing for all eventualities, not just the outcome it hopes to see - the Brexit Deal being passed by Parliament.
I have written to the Secretary of State for Transport seeking his assurance that any arrangements for Plymouth to see more continental services will be in place by 29th March. I will share his response in due course.
It's vital that Plymouth is ready and prepared to make the most of every opportunity and deal with every challenge that may come on 29th March.
