Congratulations to Babcock International for securing this prestigious contract to build the five new Type 31 ships - the latest addition to the Royal Navy’s fleet, set to replace the Type 23 frigates currently in service.
If elected in the forthcoming General Election, I will work to ensure the future of Devonport Naval Base and the dockyard, and the continued presence of the Army and Royal Marines, all of which is so core to our city’s history, economy and identity.
Devonport will no doubt have a role to play in the pre-build phase and future maintenance of these Type 31 ships. Hopefully we might also see them base-ported here, although these ships are the direct replacements for the Type 23s currently base-ported in Portsmouth. That said, it is the role of any Member of Parliament in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport to fight for Devonport Dockyard and I follow in the footsteps of previous MPs and do exactly that if the seat changes hands and I am elected at the next election.
