Rebecca toured Plympton business Alderman Tooling with Managing Director Karen Friendship for National Manufacturing Day. The purpose of National Manufacturing Day is to celebrate the manufacturing industry, highlight its benefits to the community and showcase the jobs and technologies available in the sector. Karen is the proud daughter of Alderman founder Bill Alderman and Chair of Plymouth Manufacturers’ Group. The second-generation manufacturers opened their doors to students from City College Plymouth, Eggbuckland Community College and University Technical College Plymouth for the day.
Rebecca is a passionate advocate for apprenticeships, promoting Alderman Tooling's apprenticeships in Parliament during Education Questions this month. She reguarly engages with local businesses in South West Devon so that she can remain informed of their needs from government and best lobby for their interests in Westminster.
Rebecca, Member of Parliament for South West Devon, stated:
It was great to tour Alderman Tooling with Karen for National Manufacturing Day. Alderman have traded for over 50 years in Plympton and are one of the South West’s leading sheet metal fabricators.
I met a chap on Alderman's shop floor who has worked there an astonishing 39 years. It is so promising to see these skills being passed onto the next generation with apprentices.
14% of Plymouth's workforce is employed in the manafacturing and engineering sector, one of the ten highest concentrations in the UK. Our corner of Devon has a thriving cluster of local manafacturers which offer amazing apprenticeship opportunities. I encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship to visit the Plymouth Makes website.
