It is only 106 years since women were given the right to vote. We have come a long way, three female Prime Ministers and 263 female MPs in this Parliament. Following in the footsteps of the first female MP to take seat, Nancy Astor who was MP for Plymouth Sutton, I am pleased to be the 576th woman elected to Parliament.
That said, there is clearly more work to be done to encourage more women to get involved in politics. Too often, especially in our corner of Devon, politics can feel closed off and remote. But there are so many ways to get involved.
Today is #AskHerToStand Day, encouraging women to become engaged in politics and stand for elected office. If you have questions about how you can get involved in politics – whether that’s your local Parish Council or standing for Parliament and everything in between - whatever your views, feel free to drop me an email to chat it over - rebecca.smith.mp@parliament.uk
